Fine Dining, Food and Dining

Last Wednesday on the 10th of June, Richard and I decided to celebrate his 21st Birthday at Minamishima; a Japanese Sushi restaurant located in Richmond, which Richard had read about on Broadsheet. You can read the article here (http://www.broadsheet.com.au/melbourne/food-and-drink/article/minamishima-opens).

We booked two months in advance for two seats at the bar. The best seats in the house, right in front of Koichi Minamishima and Hajime Horiguchi as they prepare the sushi. Both were particularly friendly and made the experience very relaxing and enjoyable.

Minamishima is booking only, can only seat forty guests at a time and will cost $150 per person, for a couple of entrée dishes and 15 courses of sushi omakase (chef’s selection) followed by dessert. With our dinner we each had a Japanese wabi sabi beer, which was lovely and light and I would highly recommend even to those who are not big beer drinkers.

Although we took the bar seats, there is another option for groups of 3 or more at the dining tables. For the same price, there are a couple of sharing dishes between the table and then fifteen courses of individual pieces of sushi followed by dessert. This makes it easier for larger groups to interact during the evening, as the bar is more suited towards couples who can enjoy conversation while watching the sushi be prepared.

Minamishima had an amazing ambience with beautiful interior decorating and fittings along with very friendly and polite staff. As each course (or sushi piece) was prepared and served, we were given some insight into the fish and sauces used, and told whether or not to use soy sauce.

Here are some photos I took of the food. I did not manage to get a photo of every sushi piece… Some of them I was so excited to try I forgot to take a photo! Overall, the food tasted amazing. The fish was fresh and of high quality and the flavours were beautifully balanced and incredible.

To finish our meal, we were served dessert and tea. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening and had an incredible experience. We would highly recommend Minamishima and look forward to visiting again in the future.
